Description

ABV - 15%

I believe that you will no longer find this wine for sale in the UK.

This was one of a range of single vineyard wines from Yering Station released 2008. 95% Shiraz, 5% Viognier aged in new French oak for 23 months. Low yielding vines, unfined. Quite perfumed on the nose with ripe black fruits, black pepper and spice and some toasty oak. It's big and rich with high toned fruit. It's got a cool climate feel with good acidity, but the main draw is the rich black cherry and plum fruit, with lots of spice, pepper and creamy oak.

Colour still strong and holding hue; distinctly richer and deeper than the normal Yering Station style, the exotic bouquet with black fruits, spice and licorice, the palate very long and
sustained by fine but persistent tannins.

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion, 2011

Certainly the most complex and engaging of the two Yering Single Vineyard Shiraz Viognier wines, this has deep, chocolate-coated plum fruits, pepper, smoked meats and a fragrant, spicy perfume. The palate’s smoothly shaped, with fleshy, velveteen tannins and long, deep dark-berry and chocolate flavours that linger impressively through the finish.

Matured for nearly two years in 100 percent new French oak (and doesn’t it show). Contains five percent viognier. Fermented over two weeks. Made off ten year old vines growing at 330 metres above sea level, at Coldstream in the Yarra Valley. It’s a bit much for me. The oak – which is all of cedary, clovey, creamy and toasty – is overpowering, the fruit flavours behind it not bright or robust enough to burst through it. Time will help but for now it’s not attractive drinking. Fruit flavours of dark cherry, musk, apricot blossom and plum. Noticeable spice though it’s not overtly peppery. Velvety tannin structure. Some nice components but it leaves me wanting more … or less.
